Nokia X owners rejoice, as Microsoft has just released a new update for the X family of smartphones, which adds lots of new features and improvements.

Despite rumors that no major update will be released for the Nokia X smartphones, software platform v1.2 is now available for download for those who own one of the three eligible devices: Nokia X, X+ and XL.

According to Nokia, the update is now rolling out globally and will be available OTA (over the air) for the Nokia X Dual SIM, Nokia X+ Dual and Nokia XL Dual SIM users.

Although these Nokia X smartphones are set to automatically check for a software update once every 8 days, owners can manually check for the latest update as well, by going to Settings / About Phone / System Updates / Check Now.

Keep in mind that it’s recommended to download the Nokia X Software Platform 1.2 update via Wi-Fi due to the fairly large size of the file (100+ MB).

It’s also worth mentioning that the update will keep the settings, apps, photos and text messages stored on the smartphone, so there’s no need to back up any information prior to upgrading. However, we do recommend users to back up their sensitive info to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Given the fact that this is a major update, it will take around 15-30 minutes to upgrade the mobile phones to Nokia X Software Platform version 1.2, during which you won’t be able to use your smartphone. In addition, you will be required to restart your device after the update process finishes.

Aside from announcing the update’s availability, Microsoft also confirmed some of the changes included in Nokia X Software Platform 1.2. Here are the most important improvements that Nokia X, X+ and XL owners will be able to take advantage of:

“- Enjoy improved ease of use with the new app switcher – switch easily between open apps, or close apps with a single tap; - Instant access to your mail, calendar, and notes with Outlook.com and OneNote; - Updated Nokia Store – new design to help you find content more easily, and better integration with third-party stores; - New scrollable widgets, call reject with a message, contact search in the dialer, automatic uploading to OneDrive, and local calendar support; - General performance and usability improvements.”

As mentioned earlier, the update is available OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might not arrive on all compatible devices at the same time, but you might want to check for it in a few days.
