The first information on Nokia’s Treasure Tag emerged last year in October, several days ahead of Nokia World 2013 press event, but the rumors were not confirmed and the Finnish company did not announce anything related to this.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 press render was published by @evleaks a few days ahead of the smartphone’s official launch. Alongside the phablet something that looked like a treasure tag was also present, though no additional details were unveiled at that time.

Well, it appears that Nokia is currently working on its Treasure Tag, which was supposed to arrive last year, but for unforeseen reasons, it probably got delayed for this year.

Today, Nokia Innovation reports that the highly anticipated Nokia Treasure Tag may be close to release. In fact, it won’t come as a surprise if Nokia announces it later this month at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 trade fair.

According to the cited source, Nokia Treasure Tag is being internally tested by the Finnish company, and proof of this endeavor is available in Windows Phone Store, where Nokia released a dedicated application called Nokia Treasure Tag.

The said application can only be downloaded by authorized Nokia employees and cannot be distributed to the general public yet. It is also worth mentioning that the Nokia Treasure Tag for Windows Phone will expire after 90 days since publishing.

For those unfamiliar with what a treasure tag does, here is a short recap. The treasure tag usually acts as a tracking device that allows users to pinpoint their misplaced smartphone.

It can be paired with the smartphone via NFC (Near Field Communications) and can memorize multiple “settings” for the phone, so you can switch between them with a touch of a button.

Rumor has it that Nokia Treasure Tag is also compatible with the LiveSight augmented Reality view, but this has yet to be confirmed by the Finnish company.
