It started with a very short teaser on Vine released by Nokia yesterday, that said, “something epic is coming soon,” and everyone immediately thought the freshly acquired company was likely to announce a new Lumia smartphone.

However, it turned out that this was just a marketing stunt meant to keep us hyped on what was to come. It appears that Nokia thought it would be fun to mark its Devices and Services business by Microsoft with style.

Basically, the Finnish company contacted the team responsible for the amazing “Child of the ’90s” video released last year by Microsoft, which celebrated the launch of the new version of Internet Explorer.

The team would have to make a similar video, which would tell the story of Nokia’s mobile phones business and the same time mark the Microsoft acquisition.

Well, it appears that Column Five, the agency responsible for helping create the Internet Explorer “Child of the 90’s” video and Brett Doar the lead Machine Engineer also did a great job in creating Nokia’s celebratory video, which is called “History in the making.”

Here is what one of the people responsible for creating “History in the making” has to say about this video, “This project was cool because we got to include an iconic 90s item — the Nokia phone — that wasn’t in the Child of the 90s video — thus giving it a feeling of a sequel. The other elements seen in the Nokia video (the floppy disks, Dot Matrix printer, original XBOX and an old school boom box) also pay a big homage to the `90s.”

Nokia has also provided some interesting info about the video, such as the fact that the Snake game that we can see on the video is in fact a large 18 x 18 grid with no less than 324 LED light bulbs.

It also has about 80 switches that turn off. The guy that was in charge with making it work had to use around half a mile of wire, and it took him 2 days to finish it.

The whole idea in the video is based on a Rube Goldberg machine created by Brett Doar, who is well known in the business for other wonderful projects like “Princess Machine” commercial.

If you’re a fan of Rube Goldberg style videos you will definitely love Nokia’s “History in the making” promo. Let us know in the comments what do you think about it.
