Aircel and Nokia Siemens Communications India (NSN) have come to an agreement in order to develop and operate a greenfield GSM network in Kolkata. As a result of this, several mobile phone services will be developed in India.

Among the most important changes, Nokia Siemens will bring its contribution in supplying GSM/EDGE equipment and implementation. Moreover, they will take part in the management process that these developments pressupose and will also maintain the network infrastructure.

Aircel has decided to sign a contract with Nokia Siemens due to several advantages that this company might bring in the development process. They declared to have chosen this partner for their rich technological features, extensive management service experience and fast and reliable network deployment.

Nokia Siemens will provide as part of the agreement equipment that include Flexi and mini-ultra base stations as well as soft-switching solutions. Aircel ceo-north and east - Rohit Chandra comments on the closed agreement that "Our partnership with NSN will provide us with the latest GSM technologies such as the multi-radio Flexi Base Station Platform that will not only help us provide services today but will also makes our network ready for 3G and WIMAX services as and when the regulation permits".

Still Nokia Siemens also sees several advantages that will come for Aircel through providing mobile services in a greenfield network. "This will not only help them in achieving OPEX savings but also allow them to focus on their customers' acquisition and service strategies from the first day of commercial operations", says NSN - Head India Sub-region Ashish Chowdhary.

The contract that Nokia Siemens has signed with Aircel has a span of two years and is worth Rs 3 billion. Moreover, Nokia Siemens promises that the network will start taking care of commercial operations sometime by December 2007.
