The vendor might load the older Maemo platform on it

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is expected to bring to the market a new handset in the Maemo – MeeGo family of devices, a successor to the just released Nokia N9.

There are no specific info on the new device, nor specs or photos, and even the OS that will power it is uncertain, but there are some people who seem convinced that the device will arrive on shelves soon.

The info comes from a blogger Tero Lehto, who reviewed the Nokia N9 in the Finnish IT magazine Tietokone (Computer), where he hinted at the upcoming availability of a successor for this device.

Apparently, two different sources have already confirmed the upcoming availability of this device, but they did not offer info on it.

It's hard to believe that Nokia would actually plan the release of a new handset in the N9 series, but chances are that they would be considering maintaining that niche lineup just to make a difference.

However, we should note forget that Nokia did say that the N9 is the first and only MeeGo-based device that they will be launching, and that the platform is almost dead, only about a year and a half after coming to light.

Apparently, the smartphone to follow the N9 could run under the older Maemo OS, or could be based on a completely different platform.

There is even the possibility that the said successor was none other than the Nokia Lumia 800, which just went official with Windows Phone on board, but with the same design as the N9.

Yesterday, Nokia announced the upcoming availability of a white version of the N9, as well as of a software update for the device, in line with what Nokia announced when the phone started shipping.

This clearly shows that Nokia is still focused on the N9, though the possibility that they would release a successor for it seems somehow far fetched. We'll take the info with a grain of salt for the time being, but we'll keep an eye out for additional info on the matter.
