Several months have passed since Nokia announced the Symbian Anna operating system and stated that an upgrade will be pushed to all compatible smartphones by the end of the year.

It looks like the time for upgrading has come, as the Finnish company has just announced the availability of the Symbian Anna update.

The new update is now available in the United State, which seems to be among the last to receive the upgrade, though there are many other regions that are still waiting for Symbian Anna.

Nokia introduced Symbian Anna to a number of 17 countries in Europe and Asia, back in August, including Belgium, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Thailand, UAE, and the UK.

Although Nokia announced that other countries would receive the Symbian Anna upgrade in about three weeks, it took the Finnish company more than two months to continue expanding the availability of the operating system update.

Starting today, owners of Nokia N8, C7, C6-01 and E7 will be able to upgrade to Symbian Anna. According to Nokia, the update is available OTA (over the air) or via Nokia Suite desktop software.

Even though Symbian Anna is not the latest version of Nokia's proprietary operating system, it is recommended to make the upgrade as soon as possible to take advantage of new features and enhanced performance:

- Improved text input with the help of a new portrait QWERTY keyboard; - A new split-screen view has been introduced that allows users to see the web pages, forms and message threads while they are typing; - Integrated browser is easier to use and faster; - Ovi Maps app has been improved and now features a quicker search function, public transport routes, and the option to check in to social networks, send emails and SMS messages sharing locations.

It is also worth mentioning that Symbian Anna activates NFC (Near Field Communications) hardware in the Nokia C7 for reading NFC tags on other items.
