Due to strong pre-order demand

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has reportedly pushed back the in-store release of its high-end Maemo 5-powered Nokia N900 in the UK, a handset that was originally expected to arrive on the market at the end of October. It seems that the company has registered very strong pre-order demand for the device, so strong that it actually ate out the entire supply.

The Nokia N900 seems set to attract users on its side from all points of view. It sports a large 3.5-inch touchscreen display, able to boast a high resolution, comes with a side sliding full QWERTY keyboard, packs a great deal of raw power with the ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 32GB of memory, and runs under a highly appealing OS: Maemo 5. Available for pre-order for several weeks now, the handset is expected to become available for purchase in stores as soon as December 4 will arrive, and no day sooner, it seems.

The guys over at NokNok say that Nokia itself said that the unprecedented demand registered for the new device determined it to postpone the actual launch by a week. However, those who already pre-ordered the phone will be receiving their units within the following days, which still sounds like great news. On the other hand, those who choose to wait for it to arrive on shelves so as to play with it a little before making a purchase will have to extend their wait a little more.

The price tag for the handset has been set at £499 including VAT in the UK, which doesn't sound too bad for a SIM-free handset, but which sees a great competitor in the form of Motorola MILESTONE, which has just been made available for pre-order in the country for £50 less. Moreover, the Android 2.0-based device sports about the same form factor as the Nokia N900, and it is also capable of providing a great user experience, which means that we might witness a battle between the two as soon as they both hit the shelves.
