The first MeeGo-based Nokia phone

Espoo, Finland-based mobile phone maker Nokia is moving along with the development of new high-end devices, one of which is set to be the Nokia N9, supposedly the first Nokia handset to run under the new MeeGo operating system. Reference to this piece of hardware emerged into the wild ago, but this time things seem more palpable than never, with some live photos of the mobile phone available for your viewing pleasure.

Unfortunately, it seems that there are not too many details available on the specifications list of the new mobile phone. The guys over at Negri Electronics, who came up with the photos attached to this article, did not offer info on the hardware of the device, though they promised that a full review would arrive in the near future.

Even so, some of the specs Nokia N9 would arrive on the market with can be extracted from the photos, including the fact that it would sport a sliding QWERTY keypad, an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, a front-facing camera which also appears to have LED flash, support for UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900 MHz) bands, and a nHD display (640 x 360 pixel), as BRG points out. However, it seems that the device in these photos is only a prototype unit, since it displays the Symbian S60 platform.

The Nokia N9 is meant to mark an important step in Nokia's evolution as a handset manufacturer. Starting with it, all N Series devices from the company would run under the MeeGo operating system, which resulted from the merger of Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin platforms. The currently used Symbian OS should power the company's X and E Series (probably the C Series too) handsets, but flagship phones would land only with MeeGo on board.

The recently announced Nokia N8 would be the last N Series device to run under the Symbian OS, even if the first to sport the Symbian^3 platform. The Nokia N9 is already shaping up as a very appealing device, though the actual performance on the market might differ in the end. Keep an eye on this space for further updates on the matter.
