Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced about a month ago the upcoming release of a new high-end device, the Nokia N8, the first handset to run under the Symbian^3 operating system, a device now said to be able to offer up to 180% more performance than the latest Nokia flagship handset, the N97. In other words, Nokia might have finally managed to come to the market with that competitive device that would prove it deserves to lead the mobile phone market.

The Nokia N8 is powered by a 680MHz processor, which does not sound as impressive and as powerful as the 1GHz chips included in some of the latest high-end mobile phones out there. However, it seems that, even if the processor is not clocked as high as the CPUs on Android and Windows Mobile-based devices on the market, the Nokia N8 is capable of delivering quite a lot of speed, going high up when compared to previous Symbian-powered counterparts.

The news on the performance levels of Nokia N8 comes from the guys over at Finestfones, who managed to get their hands on an N8 prototype and run some benchmarking tests on it. According to them, the upcoming Synbian^3 phone is capable of delivering 54 percent more performance than the Samsung Omnia HD, while going up by 180 percent in performance when compared to Nokia N97. The benchmarking was made with the Speedy Go! app, which enabled for the N8 to be tested both with the graphics accelerator on and off. Moreover, the handset has reportedly scored 60fps in the FPC Bench 3D graphics testing, ranking the highest the app can count.

According to Finestfones, the impressive increase in performance is due to the fact that the Symbian S60v5 OS does not take full advantage of the graphics accelerators that have been packed inside handsets powered by the operating system. At the same time, the new Symbian^3, set to land on the market on the Nokia N8, does not include the same limitations, hence better performance and an enhanced experience.
