Today, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia Appointed a new head to its MeeGo team, namely Sebastian Nyström, former leader of the Qt development team at the handset vendor. Sebastian Nyström takes the leadership of the MeeGo team from Alberto Torres, who was said back in February to leave the company, after serving as head of Nokia’s MeeGo Computers.

As a leader of Qt at Nokia, Sebastian has made the framework available under open source, free-of-charge LGPL license, Peter Schneider, Head of MeeGo Marketing at Nokia, explains in a recent blog post.

As a leader of the MeeGo team, Sebastian is set to:

1. Launching a product from our MeeGo program later this year. We believe our upcoming device will have unique appeal to the style-conscious, connected enthusiast. 2. Keeping Nokia on track to deliver necessary software updates following launch of the product. 3. Working with the Linux Foundation, Intel and the wider community to plan Nokia’s future involvement in meego.com.

In other words, the already promised and long rumored Nokia smartphone to run under the MeeGo platform would be on its way to the market during the ongoing year.

That device, initially believed to be the Nokia N9, was recently rumored to be the Nokia N950, a direct successor of the Maemo-based Nokia N900 (which was chosen not too long ago as the developer device for MeeGo, we learn).

“I know there was great disappointment in the MeeGo community, at Nokia’s decision. Many of us have gone through an emotional journey ourselves,” Peter Schneider notes in the said blog post.

“I’m personally happy to see Sebastian helping us to complete the evolution of our previous Maemo and now MeeGo efforts to an exciting product. You will see more of Sebastian in the coming weeks when we are preparing our participation in the MeeGo Conference in San Francisco,” he continues.

As you can clearly see above, Schneider notes that the Nokia MeeGo device set to arrive this year would offer “unique appeal to the style conscious, connected enthusiasts,” which doesn't sound bad at all.

However, specific info on the handset are not available at the moment, and we'll have to wait for more on it to emerge to learn what Nokia has in store for us.
