Microsoft confirmed a few days ago that Nokia Lumia 635 and Lumia 930 would be officially launched in Australia through all major carriers.

The Redmond-based company also announced that both smartphones would be available this month, but none of the carriers shared any details regarding the exact release date of the Windows Phones.

Well, it appears that Optus is the first to start selling one of the two Windows Phone 8.1 handsets that are now rolling out globally. Without any warnings, Optus opened up orders for the Nokia Lumia 635, so customers can now purchase it in either black or orange.

Nokia Lumia 635 is available for free on select 24-month plans beginning at $35 (€24) per month. Shipping is free and those who order it can benefit from “free next day delivery,” but the offer only applies to customers in capital cities for orders between midnight and 1pm (AEST), Monday to Friday.

We are expecting Optus to start taking orders for the Lumia 930 as well any moment now, but for the time being there is no official info regarding the exact release date for the smartphone, so it may take a few hours or a few days.

However, we will keep an eye out for any additional details on the matter and update the news. Keep in mind that Nokia Lumia 930 will be available in Australia through other carriers as well, including Vodafone and Telstra.

Both operators confirmed that they would carry the Lumia 930, but did not announce when they would open orders for the high-end Windows Phone 8.1 handset.

Back to the Lumia 635, this is the cheapest smartphone available on the market that comes with Windows Phone 8.1 operating system right out of the box.

The rest of the phone’s specs are pretty decent for such an affordable price. It sports a 4.5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports 480 x 854 pixels resolution and features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating for extra protection.

On the inside, the Lumia 635 is equipped with a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, which is complemented by an Adreno 305 graphics processing unit, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of internal memory.

The smartphone also packs microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 128GB) as well as a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and HD (720p) video recording. Nokia Lumia 635 lacks secondary camera and LED flash for the main photo snapper.
