Espoo, Finland-based mobile phone maker Nokia is getting closer and closer to releasing its first tablet PC, a move that was already confirmed by the company's new CEO, Stephen Elop, during an interview on YLE television.

He unveiled the fact that Nokia is indeed working on building a tablet PC, but was not specific on any details regarding the device.

One thing that it did confirm, however, seems to be the fact that Nokia won't adopt Microsoft's Windows platform for the tablet PC, but a different operating system.

“We could take advantage of Microsoft technology and software, and build a Windows-oriented tablet, or we could do things with some of the other software assets that we have. Our team right now is assessing what's the right tablet strategy for Nokia,” Elop reportedly stated.

This statement might be easily interpreted as a confirmation of the fact that Nokia won't deliver a Windows-powered tablet PC on shelves, but a device that would sport the company's own mark.

If not, Elop's next words might do so: “There are now over 200 different tablets on the marketplace, only one of them is doing really well.”

According to him, Nokia is aiming at releasing a slate that would indeed stand up in the crowd, just as that “only one” tablet does.

“And, my challenge to the team is I don't wanna be the 201st tablet on the market that you can't tell from all of the others. We have to take a uniquely Nokia prospective,” Elop reportedly continued.

This might easily suggest that Nokia could bring to the market a MeeGo-based tablet PC, just as previously promised (which would be quite different from the Android and Windows devices we see being released these days).

This is not the first time we learn that Nokia would plan the launch of a slate running something else than Windows, and a previously spotted patent filing also provided an idea of what the device would actually look like: a much bigger Nokia N8.

No other details on what Nokia might include in the said device emerged for the time being, but more should emerge soon, so stay tuned. Hopefully, the company would manage to enter the race in due time, otherwise it might never have a change to prove a winner.
