Nokia Asha 501, one of the latest devices that Nokia has announced in the Asha series, can now provide its users with the possibility to open Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files while on the go.

The feature arrives on the handset in the form of My Pocket Office, which includes Microsoft’s popular editing software, although only in a beta stage for the time being.

According to Nokia Conversations, however, these apps are already capable of opening said type of files on the device, making it easier for users to view attachments and do more while on the go.

There are three different flavors of My Pocket Office available for Asha 501, so as to cover all of the aforementioned Microsoft apps.

With My Pocket Office – docx, users will be able to open and view recent files and bookmarks. Designed mainly for opening documents, it does not come with the option to start a new one.

“As the name hints, files need to be saved in a docx format before you can open them, but I found they opened straight away when converted,” a blog post on Nokia Conversations reads.

With My Pocket Office – xlsx, users will be able to open spreadsheets while on the move, and will find it easy to swipe around for more details.

My Pocket Office – pptx, on the other hand, was designed to open PowerPoint files easily, and will start in landscape mode automatically. Loading presentations on the Asha 501 could take a while, depending on their size, it seems.

“All three of these apps have a similar appearance, making them easy to use after you’ve tried the first. The color scheme is different for each app, with blue for Word, green for Excel and red for PowerPoint – as with the icons on the full Microsoft apps themselves,” said blog post explains.

As mentioned above, these applications are only in a beta flavor for the time being, which means that there might still be a series of issues that will affect users’ experience with them.

“Overall the My Pocket Office apps have a lot of potential. Because they’re still at a beta stage minor bugs are inevitable, but they’re surprisingly polished and easy to use. Only some minor formatting issues let them down at this point,” Nokia Conversations concludes.
