The device could become official in the fourth quarter of the year

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia appears set to join the fight in the large smartphone area in the near future, as rumor has it that it might launch a 5.2-inch Windows Phone 8 handset soon.

Apparently, the company is working on a certain Lumia 825 mobile phone that would pack the aforementioned screen size, though only capable of delivering a 720p HD resolution, a recent post on dospy reads.

As UnwiredView notes, the screen resolution would explain why the device would be included in the Lumia 800 range, which means that it will be only a mid-range handset.

No official info on when the smartphone might become official has been provided as of now, but rumor has it that it will be unveiled in the fourth quarter of the year.

Clearly, this would make perfect sense, considering that Windows Phone 8 does not offer support for such large touchscreens at the moment, but that the upcoming GDR3 update (General Distribution Release 3) will change that.

The device might also sport a quad-core processor inside, though only a mid-level one, most probably a Snapdragon 400 CPU from Qualcomm, clocked at 1.2 GHz.

Provided that these rumors pan out, we could see Nokia launching yet another rather affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone in emerging markets, one that would be able to properly compete with large mid-range smartphones running under Android.

This also means that Microsoft would have Windows Phone 8 GDR3 ready by October, and that previous rumors on a high-end large Lumia smartphone coming from Nokia before the end of this year might pan out.

However, no official confirmation on the above has been provided as of now, so we’ll take the info with a grain of salt, though additional details might emerge in the not too distant future, so keep an eye on this space to learn more.
