Not the major update that was expected

It seems that owners of a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic now have a reason to rejoice, as the Finnish mobile phone maker has just released into the wild a new firmware version for their handsets. Those willing to update their devices to the new software should however know that it comes Over-the-Air for some product codes, and that it is a 4MB download (users should type *#0000# on the home screen to see whether the update is available for them as well).

We already reported that the Nokia 5800 was expecting a major update, one that would deliver a wide range of new features to its users, similar to those available with the 5530 XpressMusic, yet it seems that that this is not that update. Even so, the new firmware version 30.0.011 comes with a series of performance enhancements, as well as with a range of bug fixes, so it might not be a waste of time to update to it after all.

On the other hand, according to some early reports coming from those who already gave the software a try, it seems that the new version does not bring too many visible bugfixes, at least not at first glance. One new feature might be email notifications on the home screen, though they do not surface on all devices. At the same time, apparently some memory gets freed up with the update, while some of the Java applications are reportedly performing faster.

At the same time, some users report a blue info box that appears in the top-right corner of the screen every time a 'click' is made. Hopefully, more details on the new software version will become available in the near future, so stay tuned. In the meantime, in case you're willing to try the firmware v30.0.011, remember to back up all your data, since the handset does not come with User Data Preservation, and all the files will be lost during the update process.
