Masahiro Sakurai, one of the main creators of Super Smash Bros., says that the coming Wii U and 3Ds game is designed to focus on positioning as a core game mechanic, asking players to use space in order to gain an advantage over their opponents.

He tells Kotaku that, “Smash Bros. is all about position – where you’re at and what kind of power the player has based on where their position is at. So it’s something that players have to take advantage of.”

The developer says that his own team is using small arenas and highly skilled players in order to test the various characters’ capabilities.

The main aim is to get a roster where each fighter is capable of defeating all others as long as the player manages to position him well in the arenas.

A new Super Smash Bros. will launch on the 3DS and Wii U in 2014.
