Nintendo, besides confirming yesterday that it will, in fact, launch a Wii successor, has revealed its earnings for the last quarter of the fiscal year that ended on March 31, as well as sales figures for the 3DS platform.

Nintendo, after a huge amount of rumors, confirmed that it would be releasing the successor of the Wii home console at this year's E3, and would launch it on the market next year.

Judging by the earnings posted by the company yesterday, it couldn't have arrived at a better time, as Nintendo revealed a 66 percent loss in net profit year over year, while net sales fell by 29.3 percent.

Nintendo hasn't been doing too well in terms of sales in the last year, as the company's Wii home console, as well as the DS portable device, haven't reached the same huge sales than in previous years.

This resulted in a net income of 77.6 billion yen, from March 31, 2010, until March 31, 2011, as opposed to the 228.6 billion yen recorded between 2009 and 2010.

In terms of console sales, Nintendo has revealed that the recently released 3DS handheld has sold 3.61 million units, coming in just shy of the 4 million projection set by the Japanese company before its release.

Nintendo also insisted that the earthquakes and tsunami that affected Japan back at the beginning of March didn't have any direct effect on its production facilities, but it is expecting some "indirect impact from individual consumption patterns or economic conditions in the future."

With the recent price cut made to the Nintendo Wii, slashing its price to $169.99 on the black Wii bundle, and with more games that appear on the 3DS, Nintendo hopes that sales will maintain at the same level, at least until the Wii successor is released.
