In Japan

In the Land of the Rising Sun, the skies were a bit dark for Nintendo, as the PlayStation 3 solidly outsold the Nintendo Wii, and as the PlayStation Portable overtook the Nintendo DS. But the situation has been reversed, with the Wii and DS becoming the best selling products in their categories.

The Nintendo DSi sold around 55,000 units in Japan from April 27 till May 10 and was the best selling videogame console.

The PlayStation Portable was second with a little over 43,000 units moved to gamers in the same period. The Nintendo lead is even bigger, as the Nintendo DS Lite has also moved some 7,821 units in the same time frame.

The Wii and the PlayStation 3 are no longer head to head. The Nintendo home console has reached sales of 24,397 units, while the PlayStation 3 only moved around three quarters of these numbers, at 18,483. The Xbox 360 has suffered the shame of being beaten in sales by the PS2 with 5,137 to 5,068.

The Nintendo domination is also extended to the videogames chart, where DS games occupy the first four positions, although overall sales are rather low. For example the best selling game was Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Sora no Tankentai, roughly translated as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of the Sky, sold 44,000 copies, which is less than the number of DS handhelds sold at the same time.

Dragon Ball Kai: Saiyajin Raishuu from Namco Bandai moved 41,000 copies, while Made in Ore, which is a Wario Ware title, also moved 41,000. Mario & Luigi RPG 3 is showing staying power with another 26,000 copies sold, while the only PlayStation Portable title to break the Nintendo domination is a budget edition of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G from Capcom, which sold 23,000.
