The Nintendo 3DS is set to outsell the upcoming PSP2, as the Nintendo handheld platform will attract more customers than Sony's own device, at least according to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

Nintendo has just presented the official details of its 3DS console, which is set to be launched next month in its native Japan, and at the end of March in both North America and Europe.

Sony, meanwhile, is expected to finally reveal the PSP2, the next iteration in its PlayStation Portable lineup, at the end of the month, even if details about the new device were leaked many months ago.

According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, the battle between the two devices will be close, but, in the end, Nintendo's 3DS will reign supreme, just like the DS beat the regular PSP this current generation.

"I think that the 3DS will outsell the PSP2, because the 3DS is new and different, while the PSP2 is likely going to be a souped up version of the old PSP," Pachter told IncGamers. "Thus, I think that 3DS will have greater success in capturing the consumer's imagination."

Pachter then likened the battle to the current one between Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's PlayStation Move motion detection systems.

"I think this is Kinect vs. Move all over again," he added. "Kinect is outselling Move because Kinect is new and different, while Move is very similar to the Wii."

Microsoft stated that the Kinect sold over 8 million units in two months, while Sony is highly reluctant to reveal any official figures concerning the PlayStation Move.

The Nintendo 3DS will be launched before the PSP2, in February and March, while Sony is expected to release its device on the market around the end of the year.

The PSP2 announcement is expected on January 27, so more details will be available then.
