14 DAY TRIAL // File this under rumors until we get official word, but know that Nintendo might have just discontinued the 3DS console. Although there is no confirmation yet, there are several things pointing to that conclusion.
The folks over at Destructoid report that there’s a high chance the original Nintendo 3DS might have been discontinued. We’re talking about Nintendo of America, so if you live in Europe, you might find the gaming console at various retailers.
Anyway, it looks like several major retailers in North America, including Walmart, Target and Best Buy aren’t selling the original Nintendo 3DS anymore, and the same goes for Toys “R” Us, the store that had the exclusive Coral Pink version on sale until recently.
GameStop employees also confirmed that their stores would not be restocking the Nintendo 3DS anymore, but there might be a few units on sale in some brick and mortar stores.

Moreover, even the official Nintendo website now lacks the option to purchase a 3DS console. Instead customers are offered the option to choose between Nintendo 3DS XL and 2DS.
Last but not least, a Nintendo fan-run site making capture boards for the Nintendo 3DS explicitly says that “the original model 3DS is no longer in production and new systems are becoming difficult to find.”
The silent disappearance of the original 3DS points to a new console release in the not so distant future. It will be interesting to see how long it will take Nintendo to discontinue the 3DS XL model as well, though we believe it’s a matter of weeks.
So, if you’re not waiting for the new 3DS to arrive and prefer the original console, you might want to hurry and purchase it now while there are still some remaining units. Obviously, you’ll have to dig deep to find one. Luck is another thing you’ll need in order to find one, especially if you live in North America.
