Video game publisher and hardware developer Nintendo has announced that it plans to deliver a system update for the Nintendo 3DS handheld on April 25, allowing gamers to create new folders in the Home Menu of their system while also preparing the system for a Mario Kart 7 patch.

The company says that the new folders in the Home Menu are offered in order to allow players to better organize their downloaded content and that each will hold 60 icons.

A new system for recommending content in the Nintendo eShop will be implemented in the system update and users also get a new way for updating their software.

In mid-May, Nintendo will use the new system to deliver a patch for Mario Kart 7, its popular racing game, solving the so-called Maka Wuhu glitch that allows players to exploit shortcuts.

Those gamers who do not download the Nintendo-supplied patch will not be able to enjoy the online multiplayer game modes.

After Mario Kart 7 was launched in early December 2011, gamers quickly discovered the exploit and then asked Nintendo to fix it in order to keep online races balanced.

The company initially said that it had no clear way of deploying a patch, but it seems to have created a new update mechanics for the Nintendo 3DS in order to address the issue.

The Nintendo 3DS has started sluggishly on all markets, but it has since managed to gain Steam and attract millions of users after Nintendo released popular video games, including Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.

Recently, the company has also confirmed that it plans to launch New Super Mario Bros 2 on the new handheld during the fall, with new stages and gameplay mechanics.

It’s not clear whether Nintendo is also planning future firmware updates for the 3DS.
