Nintendo is seriously raising up the hype around its 3DS handheld console, not just by slashing the price and getting ready an onslaught of new games, but also by deploying a brand new color for the device, called "Flame Red."

The Nintendo 3DS was released last month and, while the console sold quite a lot of units, its steep price and low number of quality games made many fans put off buying the device.

Now, the Japanese company is set to cut the price of the 3DS from its initial $249.99 to just $169.99, while promising that a wide array of games will be released for it in the upcoming months, not just in the form of retail ones, like Super Mario 3D Land or Mario Kart 7, but also as downloadable titles, with many classic remakes hitting the device later this year.

Besides these new things, Nintendo has also confirmed that a new color option for the 3DS will be made available, alongside the already present Aqua Blue and Cosmos Black, called Flame Red.

"Nintendo 3DS is poised to be on fire for the holidays, with its new suggested retail price, great games and our new Flame Red color," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "With major upcoming releases in the Star Fox, Pokémon and Mario series, in addition to downloadable offerings from Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Video and Netflix, the system offers new and fun experiences to owners on a daily basis."

Nintendo also highlighted the praise it's been getting from its retail partners, many of whom have already started slashing the price of the 3DS before the official start, August 12, thus allowing customers to buy the console at a lower price and still get into the Ambassador program, which gives them 20 free downloadable games later this year.
