You might be familiar with Nikon as being one of the world’s prominent photo gear manufacturers, but the company is also involved in alternate activities, like doing research.

And the latest to be made available claims that the average man will cause £1,759 / $2,930 / €2,127 worth of damage to their gadgets over their life-time (via Photographyblog).

Gadgets might have become an essential part of our lives, but that doesn’t mean we’re less clumsy with them. We have all been there, our hands were shaky for a second and our smartphone ended up on the floor.

The research shows that men, not women, are most bound to damage their gadgets (laptops, smartphones, cameras, tablet and eReaders) and the way of going about the business is quite varied, including dropping, smashing, dunking and dipping them.

Over 27% of the men involved in the study have been found to have damaged at least one gadget beyond repair in the last five years. Beyond repair means the owner had to take the device to a shop to have it fixed and had to pay good money to do so.

The study involved 1004 British citizens and was conducted to celebrate the launch of the robust Nikon 1 AW1 camera, which is capable of surviving being in the hands of the most awkward user.

The research goes on to say the average British male usually owns £2,329 / $3,880 / €2,817 worth of gadgets from the categories we outlined above.

From these individuals, 38% were damaged by crashing to the floor. The second common scenario was dropping it in water or other liquids or just splashing it with something liquid.

Children are also notorious gadget abusers and 11% of the devices that go through their hands end up being harmed somehow. 5% of those involved in the study accidentally (we hope) sat on it and 3% injured it by throwing it somewhere.

But that’s not something that will have any effect on the new Nikon 1 AW1, as Nikon Junior Product Manager Thuan Bui explains.

“Being waterproof shock proof and freeze proof the Nikon 1 AW1 is perfect for keeping up with the most active lifestyles. And with so many of us causing some sort of damage to our priced possessions this one less gadget you need to worry about.”

“What’s more, whether it falls into a drink on a night out, it’s left outside in the rain or dropped on the floor, you’ll still get great quality photos of all your adventures.”

The research concludes laptop owners are the most clumsy, with 29% of harmed devices pertaining to this category, followed in close proximity by smartphones (25%) and cameras (15%).
