Earlier this month, we told you a few things about the Nikon 1 J4 mirrorless camera and highlighted the fact that it was just a matter of time until the photo manufacturer would launch it into the wild. Well, the time has come as Nikon has just pulled the veil off the Nikon 1 J4, considered the successor of the mid-range Nikon 1 J3 model.

We should remind you that just a month ago, Nikon announced the pricey V3 interchangeable-lens camera, but the company is currently rolling out a more compact offering, which we hope will arrive on the market with a friendlier price tag.

The new Nikon 1 J4 can be considered to be a pretty speedy camera and bundles a bunch of beginner-centric features.

Spec wise, the J4 seems to be retaining the spirit of the above-mentioned V3, but crammed in a smaller, sleeker body.

The camera comes bundled with an 18.4 megapixel 1-inch (CX format) sensor with higher resolution than the 14.3 megapixel one we saw the J3 arrive with.

And like the V3, the new mirrorless has been upgraded to the latest Expeed 4A processing engine, so customers can expect to take advantage of hybrid autofocus and truly fast continuous shooting speeds of up to 20 frames per second. The camera will come with the 1 NIKKOR VR 10-33mm f/3.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM lens.

The hybrid AF system will also offer up to 171 contrast-detect and 105 phase-detect AF points and nearly 100% area coverage across the frame.

The V3 can shoot 1920 x 1080 video at 60 frames per second. 120 fps is also possible, but resolution will be downgraded to 1280 x 720 if you choose this option.

The V3 also has Wi-Fi that allows users to transfer images to mobile devices. Nikon is changing the recording format of the camera to microSD cards, with the photo standard remaining regular SD.

On the rear side, we have a 3-inch 1037k-dot LCD touchscreen. Users are invited to use the physical button in concert with the touchscreen to promote overall smoother navigation.

The icons displayed on the LCD are very easy to see and read and users will be able to precisely set settings such as shutter speed, aperture value or ISO sensitive. Nikon is offering five shooting modes, including Auto, Creative, Best Moment Capture, Motion Snapshot and Advanced Movie.

Some accessories will be provided when the Nikon 1 J4 makes it into the wild, including a waterproof case. At the moment, the availability and the pricing of the new mirrorrless haven’t been made available.
