Movie studios are doing their best to meet all the demands of today’s moviegoers, as they have been since the early days of the industry. Studies and numbers show that 3D films are the way to go, since, despite the increased production costs, they average grosses superior to those of 2D films. Actor Nicolas Cage also picked up on this and has consequently just agreed to star in a 3D action film, “Drive Angry,” The Hollywood Reporter informs.

The action film, also billed as a revenge drama, will be helmed by Patrick Lussier, who has some experience with 3D projects, having last worked on the highly successful “My Bloody Valentine 3D.” For the script of the action flick, Lussier will join forces with his partner in crime and writing for the aforementioned horror film, Todd Farmer. The plot will stick to the basics of the genre, centering on a man (Cage) on a revenge mission after his wife and daughter have been brutally slain.

“Nicolas Cage is getting the 3D treatment. The actor has signed to star in ‘Drive Angry,’ a revenge action movie that Patrick Lussier will direct for Nu Image/Millenium Films. Michael De Luca is producing. Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Avi Lerner and Boaz Davidson are executive producing for Nu Image/Millennium, which is planning to begin production in April in Louisiana; the company has a new $10 million studio in Shreveport, La.” THR says on the Heat Vision blog.

Further details on the production have not yet been made available, but, judging from the little that is known of the plot, this will certainly be one amazing ride for fans of vendetta action films, not to mention the large Nicolas Cage fanbase. This is, as noted above, Cage’s first foray into 3D films, but marks a return for director Lussier, who started off by editing Wes Craven’s films and permanently took out a page in history for himself this year with “My Bloody Valentine 3D,” which made $51 million domestically.

“Written by Lussier and Todd Farmer, the story centers on a man (Cage) driven by rage who is chasing the people who killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. The vendetta / rescue spins out of control as the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.” THR further explains about the plotline of the upcoming film.
