Later during 2011, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft is expected to launch a new version of its Windows Phone operating system, which was spotted into the wild before under the codename of Mango, and which is almost confirmed to be headed to shelves as Windows Phone OS 7.5. The 7.5 version already emerged during the MIX11 conference, but the speaker reportedly played it off as a mistake.

However, this time around, the version number was spotted on the Microsoft Partner Network, where the Mango update was clearly called Windows Phone OS 7.5 (the page has been modified since).

This would indeed make sense, considering previously leaked Windows Phone OS builds, the guys over at WPCentral note in a recent article.

Having the next Windows Phone update released as version 7.5 would be in line with Microsoft's numbering and labeling of the previous Windows Mobile platform, thought the company said in fall last year that they would be moving away from it.

Considering the fiasco that Windows Mobile 6.5 proved, it would be a great idea for Microsoft to call the next Windows Phone update differently.

However nothing was officially confirmed for the time being, and this is what a recent tweet from Microsoft's Brandon Watson reads as well.

As stated above, Mango is set to land on handsets sometime this fall, both new Windows Phones and on those who were released in October last year.

Microsoft already unveiled some of the goodies that would be included with it, such as multitasking, Internet Explorer 9, Twitter integration in People's Hub, and more.

The company is already offering a preview of the platform, via the said web page on the Microsoft Partner Network. Here's what the company notes on that page:

The next major release of Windows Phone happens later in 2011, but you can get a preview now. Find out how new features, such as multitasking enhancements, updated developer tools, and new capabilities coming to Marketplace can help developers build apps that generate revenue for their businesses.
