A new game could visit events that took place before the main trilogy

While Mass Effect 3 ends the trilogy of titles that focus on Commander Shepard, it seems that future games might visit the franchise’s past, at least according to one of the game’s producers.

The Mass Effect series has delighted millions by telling the story of Commander Shepard as he or she, depending on the player’s preference, tries to unite various alien races from across the universe in front of a single threat.

After Shepard’s trilogy concludes next month, in Mass Effect 3, it seems that the series might go back to the past of the franchise, at least according to BioWare producer Michael Gamble.

He recently hinted to OXM that there are plenty of conflicts in the universe that already took place and can provide great settings for a new game.

"Without going down any specific path, you can think of many, many different areas throughout the IP, throughout the history, where there are large wars to be won, battles to be had, and a lot of development to be done around where these races came from, how they came about,” he said.

"We have so much to draw from. We haven't made a decision about whether we'll do anything in the future, but if we were to do something, we just have a lot of information to choose from.”

The first book in the Mass Effect series saw its action take place before the actual video games and went on to become quite successful, proving that people are interested in the backstory of the franchise’s universe.

"If you boot up Mass Effect 3 and look through the codices you'll see we have tons and tons of backstory," Gamble added. "The future is wide open for what we can possibly do."

The BioWare executive also mentioned last week that, even if a Mass Effect 4 wasn’t official, fans of the series should definitely hold onto their save game files, just in case.
