Back when it first launched, the Aakash tablet was the cheapest slate to ever grace the Indian market, and it managed to retain the status to this day.

Now an Indian Telecom official stated that the next-generation Aakash will come sporting an even cheaper price tag, if that’s even humanly possible. The Aakash is a tablet created with the educational sector in mind, which has received support by the Indian government.

The new version of the slate (Aakash 4) will start shipping in January and will sell for prices ranging between Rs. 2,000 / $32 / €24 to Rs. 2,500 / $40 / €30, reports TechThree. Pretty similar to how the Datawind UbiSlate has been priced in the US.

The Indian official says the tablet is going to be manufactured by several players and will come sporting a 7-inch display, 4GB of internal storage extendable to 32GB, frontal camera and options to have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 2G, 3G or 4G connectivity added.
