Source upholds that a new iPhone model would definitely need faster Internet speeds

Silicon Alley Insider reports that a “scuttlebutt” it has heard from a “plugged-in source in the mobile industry” says that an upcoming iPhone model will have a significantly faster Internet connection. It is only logical to assume that, as faster, more powerful chips become available, Apple will want to have a device that takes advantage of them in the users' hands.

In regards to the rumor, the source adds more thoughts. Those include:

· Since AT&T's 4G (LTE) network won't be ready for a year or more, the rumor should not have anything to do with it; · The rumor might be referring only to faster WiFi, not faster 3G access; · AT&T has repeatedly vowed to speed up its 3G network via updates to the network, the site acknowledges. It is being suggested that the current iPhone model may not be able to handle the new speeds. So... yeah: new hardware should be in order; · At least in New York, the iPhone's 3G speed has been rather slow. Faster 3G and WiFi would be a blessing, the source adds.

Silicon Alley Insider also reveals that, although it has contacted Apple for clarification, the company is yet to answer. The site, however, expects Apple to remain silent on the matter, as do we.

Softpedia note

Everything mentioned above makes a lot of sense, while Apple is widely expected to have a new device ready for release in summer 2009. Several, undisclosed features in the new iPhone OS 3.0 beta may also act as indication that the company behind the Mac operating system doesn't want to discuss some things publicly until the hardware requirements are met. Apple is probably more confident not having to go through a Q&A with the press after disclosing dozens of yet-unsupported features. Nevertheless, the fresh functionality is there and more new findings are being reported every day. So, would you say a new version of the iPhone is definitely in order this year?
