Microsoft has debuted a new Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program, inviting users to become a part of the testing efforts for the development of the next refresh for the services built around its gaming console. In this regard, Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson), the Director of Programming for the Microsoft gaming network Xbox Live, revealed that the Redmond company was looking to start the testing of new features coming to Xbox LIVE, mainly related to social networking enhancements and to its digital media player. It is in fact for upcoming features including Zune, Facebook and Twitter that the software giant is introducing the new Xbox LIVE Update Preview program.

“Much like we have done in the past, you’ll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox LIVE Gamertag,” Hryb stated. “Once you do that, you need to fill out the "Xbox LIVE Update Preview Sign Up" survey in order to be considered for receiving the Preview System Update. We're asking a few questions about where you live, your home network, ISP connection and a few other pieces of information. We are looking for a good cross-section of our members in order to get the best feedback we can.”

Hryb noted that all applications would be reviewed by the Xbox team. This means that simply signing up for the Xbox LIVE Update Preview program will in no way guarantee that you will be allowed to become one of the early testers. Future participants will be selected by the Xbox team in accordance with their testing criteria and will be notified via email. Microsoft promised that those selected would receive notification in approximately a week after they will first sign up.

“A couple of points before you head off to register: We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good. This opportunity is open to all Xbox LIVE Members in regions where Xbox LIVE is available. Just completing the survey does not automatically get you access to the Preview Program. We’ll be making final selections from the completed surveys and send you an email if you are selected. While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, Priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process,” Hryb added.
