Apple’s iDVD application has been updated to version 7.1.1, an update that should improve the stability of the software, while also adding compatibility with iPhoto ‘11 when sending slideshows to iDVD.

iDVD is one of the two iLife ‘11 applications that didn’t make it in Apple’s Mac App Store, the other being iWeb, a tool for making and maintaining web sites.

Although clearly one of the less important iLife apps, iDVD is still receiving systematic updates tasked with improving users’ experience.

The latest of those is iDVD 7.1.1 which, according to the Cupertino, California-based giant “improves overall stability and ensures compatibility when sending slideshows from iPhoto '11 to iDVD.”

Apple recommends that all iDVD 7 users install this update, either via the Mac OS X built-in Software Update mechanism, or by downloading the standalone updater from its Support / Downloads web site.

This release requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later and (obviously) iDVD 7.

In addition to provide the tools to create your own DVD “in less time than it takes to watch one,” iDVD comes in handy as it also lets you customize your DVDs by starting with themes.

However, the app’s future is uncertain, with Apple being rumored on multiple occasions to drop iDVD (as well as iWeb) from the iLife suite.

One feature worth noting in iDVD is OneStep, which allows you to create your own “digital dailies.”

Users simply plug in their camcorder and hit OneStep DVD to have iDVD take all the footage on the camcorder and burn it to optical media.

As the user burns the disc, iDVD shows a progress bar providing stage-by-stage indicators, complete with live video thumbnails.
