It has a surprisingly small display though, of 2.7 inches in diagonal

Some people may be used to camcorders that are large and bulky, the type that have to be carried on your shoulder, but there are plenty of exceptions.

Here is the latest one: the Canon VIXIA Mini, which is optimized for self-shooting more than anything else.

That's not to say it won't be able to do everything else a camcorder is supposed to do. It most definitely will.

Still, the size and mode of handling definitely prevents this item from qualifying as an ordinary device.

Spec-wise, the Canon VIXIA Mini uses a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and a 2.7-inch, 230K-dot-resolution display.

The display isn't all that special. What is special is how the screen can lift and turn from 90 degrees to 180 degrees. It's the whole reason why self-shots are so easy to take with it.

To add to the benefits of a variable-angle screen, the newcomer possesses a built-in stand on the underside, which can lift the whole thing to 60 degrees (or anything below that).

Then there's the automatic lens cover, which flips closed when the camera is not in use.

Furthermore, the Canon product boasts a dedicated power port (for recharging), an HDMI output, a physical record button, an on-off switch, a switch for the kickstand, a micro-USB connector, and a loop for a wrist strap (on both sides).

All the hardware is handled by the Canon DIGIC DV4 Image Processor and a BSI CMOS sensor. As for data storage, it is done on a microSD card. You'll have to buy that separately though.

As for software, the OS of the camera isn't really important. What is relevant is that both iOS and Android devices (phones, tablets, etc.) can control the camcorder via the Canon CameraAccess2 App (already available for download).

Sales will start in September, for $299 / €299. A carrying case will be available for an extra $14.99 / €14.99.
