David Jaffe, the lead developer and one of the co-founders of Eat Sleep Play, has announced that his upcoming re-imagining of Twisted Metal has been delayed to 2012, after initially being given a launch date of October 4 2011.

The game is set to be offered exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

Jaffe says that development work on the game is not yet ready and that the team he leads is more interested in creating a good game than in meeting the initial launch date.

Jaffe says that the game will be shown to players at the Gamescom and PAX events and that he hopes that feedback from fans will allow the game to be even better when it appears in 2012.

Writing on the official PlayStation blog Jaffe has been saying that, “Sony has been – and remains – a super supportive champion and collaborator on this title and all of us at Eat Sleep Play are so grateful that their patience and generosity will allow us the extra time needed to polish our demented baby until it shines.”

He added, “Most importantly, we plan on treating you – the kind folks who play our game (and pay our bills) – like the VIPs that you are. You only deserve our best and we appreciate your understanding as we take a little more time to guarantee that our best is what we deliver.”

Jaffe worked with Sony Computer Entertainment of America until 2007 when he partnered with Scott Campbell to create Eat Sleep Play and launched a PS2 port of the PlayStation Portable title Twisted Metal Head ON: Extra Twisted Edition in 2008.

The new Twisted Metal will use the same vehicle combat mechanics of previous titles in the series but the developers have said that they plan to emphasize the multiplayer elements.
