Why only two characters when the game hosts so many?

Yesterday, Nintendo released the much anticipated official website for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Wii fighting game known in Japan as Dairanto Smash Brothers X. Along with the website's release Nintendo rolled out some screenshots of the great looking game. Today the company has released 8 more Brawl screens to drool over. The game is still slated for a 2007 release.

Brawl is the third iteration of the Super Smash Bros and the first Super Smash Bros. game that features at least one character from a franchise not owned by Nintendo with the inclusion of Solid Snake from Konami's Metal Gear series. The first gameplay footage was released at E3 2006, while its second official trailer was unveiled at the 2006 Nintendo World Tour.

Although many rumors said that Super Smash Bros. Brawl was deep into development and wasn't going to be released until 2008, Nintendo dissipated such speculations, releasing the game's official website and a truck-load of razor-sharp detailed screens.

The game features pretty much all Nintendo's video game characters:

- Fox McCloud: the main protagonist of the Star Fox series - Kirby: the star of the Kirby series, first appearing in Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy - Link: the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda series - Mario: Nintendo's official mascot couldn't miss his spot in the game - Meta Knight: a recurring enemy of the Kirby series - Pikachu: the mascot in the Pok?mon series - Pit: the savior of the Kid Icarus series - Samus Aran: the heroine of the Metroid series - Snake: the main guy of Konami's Metal Gear franchise - Wario: an antagonist of Mario and the star of the WarioWare Inc. and Wario Land games

However, the new images below seem to have been released only for Mario and Zelda fans, as all 8 show just two characters in action: Link and Mario. They look great though, don't they? As much as I don't like praising the Wii (not that it needs any praising), I have to admit that Brawl looks stunning, next-gen even.
