Nintendo is getting ready to start launching its brand new Nintendo 3DS handheld console around the world later this month, so its famous games designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game was coming to the device afterward.

All of Nintendo's platforms have received iterations of the company's hugely successful Super Mario Bros. series, and the 3DS will be no exception, with Miyamoto confirming to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata that Mario and Luigi will be arriving for the new device as soon as possible.

The famous games designer talked with the company president during his latest Iwata Asks session.

"In the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system," Miyamoto said.

"I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new Super Mario Bros. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS."

The Super Mario Bros. series has been one of the most popular franchises for the Japanese company, with the most recent title, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, selling a huge amount of copies all over the world.

According to Iwata, the four-player local cooperative mode really stood out and helped families get together and play the title.

"I think families played the original Super Mario Bros. together, too. I feel like New Super Mario Bros. Wii suddenly brought us back to that time, and expanded upon it," Iwata said.

As such, bringing the series to the 3DS was pretty much a certainty, but it's great to hear it straight from Miyamoto himself.

Expect the title to really innovate with the 3D technology that is supported by the device, so plenty of people will be eager to see the first details when they are made available.

The Nintendo 3DS is set to be launched in Japan on February 26, in Europe on March 25, and in North America on March 27.
