Not long ago, we saw how the pay-TV market is still very much alive and kicking, and it looks like Trident and Kaon Media are determined to keep promoting such services, and others, what with the latter's new set-top box.

As some users may or may not know, the IBC 2011 trade show is an event that is taking place in Amsterdam as we speak (between 8 and 13 September).

At the event, Trident Microsystems has its own booth, and it is there that Kaon Media's new set-top box will show itself.

Based on the former's SoC, runs the Android operating system and is intended for service operators (especially top IP service providers) and their customers.

"Kaon Media is pleased to use Trident's SoC to deliver advanced Android set-top boxes. We are one of the leading STB manufacturers to the world, with customers that include many of the top IP service providers,” said Chul-min Kim, CTO of Kaon Media.

“We have found Trident's STB solution to be the highest-performing SoC with production-ready software and unparalleled support for the Android ecosystem for IP STB markets. Our longstanding relationship with Trident in developing advanced STB solutions allows us to provide compelling products to our customers."

The product combines broadcast content with video-on-demand and IP-based content, in addition to supporting the Android digital home ecosystem.

"We are pleased to showcase an Android-powered STB with Kaon Media," said Mark Samuel, senior vice president and general manager of Trident's Set-Top Box Business Unit.

"Kaon's software platform built on Android runs very effectively on Trident's highly power- and cost-optimized STB solutions. Our SoC products are ideal for Android-based digital home solutions because of our efficient architecture. Our worldwide software design team, with years of Android development experience in the digital home, gives us a competitive edge in bringing highly optimized Android-based STB solutions to production in record time."
