QNAP Systems has just announced its first 2.5-inch SATA HDD 4-bay NAS device, built to take advantage of the low-power requirements of Intel's Atom processor. Designed for SMB and SOHO users, the new SS-439 Pro Turbo NAS can be equipped with up to four power-saving 2.5-inch hard disk drives, with support for RAID 5 and RAID 6, providing users with secure data protection.

“The SS-439 Pro is a compact, silent, and power-saving server which is ideal to work for long hours in the office. When four low power 2.5" hard drives are installed, the power consumption of the NAS is only 18W, which is almost the same as an energy-saving light bulb. It is an environment-friendly storage solution that largely saves the electricity expense of the users and minimizes pollution to the earth,” says Jerry Deng, product manager from QNAP.

QNAP's new SS-439 Pro Turbo NAS has been designed to deliver a number of features, including support for network, FTP and web server featuring built-in phpMyAdmin, Joomla, MySQL/SQLite, editable php.ini printer server and more. The solution also serves as a backup server with support for third-party software, including Acronis True Image, CA Brightstor ARCserve Backup, EMC Retrospect, Symantec Backup Exec, LaCie Silverkeeper. In addition, users will also be able to use the SS-439 Pro as a PC-less BitTorrent download client.

As far as hardware specifications go, the new NAS is built on a 1.6GHz Atom processor, coupled with 1GB of DDR2 RAM memory. There are four 2.5-inch SATA II hot-swappable and lockable trays with LED indicators, to support the user's need for an increased storage solution. In addition, the NAS also features three USB 2.0 ports and two eSATA ports. Unfortunately, there is no word on pricing and availability at this time.
