Researchers at the Harvard University announce the development of a robot that can mimic its surroundings, displaying an advanced camouflage system. This capability extends all the way to the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The flexible robot can only operate while tethered. It is able to scan its surroundings and determine the predominant colors. Scientists then pump colored or fluorescent liquids through a series of small channels inside the device.

One of the main advantages of the scientific tool is that it will enable researchers to investigate animal behavior in situation where stealth is key. Experts will be able to “infiltrate” secluded animal colonies, and observe the creatures unobtrusively.

Above is a video posted on YouTube by National Geographic, a short presentation of the robot and its capabilities. Enjoy!
