Insomniac Games has just revealed a few new details about one of its upcoming titles, Resistance 3, right ahead of the launch of the first gameplay video, which will arrive during this week's Spike TV Video Game Awards.

According to Insomniac Creative Director, Marcus Smith, Resistance 3's protagonist will be Joseph Capelli, as revealed a few months ago, who will need to travel a ravaged USA from Oklahoma to New York City.

Resistance fans will remember him as one of Nathan Hale's comrades back in Resistance 2.

His mission is simple: to attempt to take down the brutal Chimera monsters which have overrun the whole world and are now exterminating the last remains of the human species.

During his trip, Capelli will encounter new monsters, use new weapons and team up with other resistance fighters in order to survive the Chimera onslaught and reach his destination in one piece.

Smith also revealed quite a few new details about gameplay, as well as the online modes, including co-operative and multiplayer ones.

First of all, the weapon wheel is back, meaning Capelli will be able to use all of his available weapons, no longer limiting his selection to just two weapons, as seen in Resistance 2.

The weapons will support upgrades, so you're going to augment their firepower in order to resist and take down new Chimera factions like feral or militarized ones, and different types of monsters, including behemoths or the new "longlegs" species.

In terms of co-operative gameplay, the single-player campaign can be played with a friend, either locally, through split-screen, or online, but no details were given about any dedicated co-op mode, like in the second Resistance game.

The multiplayer mode will be a "more focused" experience, and will emphasize progression and new equipment rather than numbers, like in the first and the second Resistance titles.

Expect more details after the Spike TV Video Games Awards will air, on December 11, and as we approach the release date of Resistance 3, in the fall of 2011.
