A new lighter and more power efficient version of the PlayStation 3 home console is reported to appear in the following weeks with retailers from around the world, depending on their current stocks.

Sales of the PlayStation 3 home console really took off with the arrival of the revised PlayStation 3 "Slim" edition, which had a better design and was more efficient in a lot of ways over the original home console from Sony.

Now, according to a report from Andriasang, retailers are set to receive a brand new version of the PS3, which is even more efficient than the current editions on sale.

The new console mode, codenamed CECH-3000, will have the traditional 160GB or 320GB hard drive, but sees its internal components be upgraded, cutting its power consumption from the current 230W to just 200W, and the weight from 3 kilograms, around 6 pounds, to 2.6kg, around 5 pounds.

On the outside of the device, it seems that there are some changes done to the power and eject buttons, while the different LEDs that helped users figure out what their console was doing have also been modified.

The report is sketchy in regards to other exterior changes, so we can't say for sure how changed the new console is, as opposed to the current model, the CECH-2500, until a formal announcement from Sony appears in the following weeks.

The website claims that the new PlayStation 3 models are already in production, and are going to be deployed to retailers from all around the world after the current stock of devices are sold to customers.

The pricing is expected to remain the same so, if you were planning on buying a new PS3, you'd better wait it out until we know for sure that a lighter and more efficient device is coming.
