Apple released a maintenance update to the Mac OS X 10.3, Panther, operating system.
The company released both Mac OS X 10.3.8 and Mac OS X Server 10.3.8.
According to the company, the enhancement in this updates for the operating system are: improved OpenGL technology and updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers; improved file sharing and directory services for mixed Mac and PC networks; improved compatibility for third party applications and devices; and previous standalone security updates. All these are comprised in the Mac OS X 10.3.8 version.
The server update comes with enhancements in the following areas: improved reliability of Open Directory replication and PDC authentication; more reliable binding to Active Directory domains; improved compatibility for third party applications and devices; and previous standalone security updates.
All users are advised to upgrade to these versions, the client version "weighs" in a total of 26.6 MB and the server version 27.7 MB . Even Apple had posted the software packages to its Web site, but had yet to distribute the releases through its Mac OS X Software Update mechanism.
The word was out even a few weeks ago that Apple had an update set for the Panther operating system, and that Mac OS X 10.3.8 will be one of the final updates to Apple's Panther OS. Previous reports indicated that it was set to deliver improvements to the Mac OS X graphics sub-system and increase overall system reliability.
