Smartphones are getting bigger and bigger batteries

Skimpy battery life has been one of the problems smartphone enthusiasts have had to deal with since like forever. But device manufacturers have been striving to come up with ways to prolong smartphone life cycle for as long as possible.

Just look at Gionee’s recent Marathon M5 smartphone, which boasts a dual-battery setup with a total capacity of 6,020 mAh.

But what if we told you there’s a phone that bundles a powerhouse of even larger capacity? For example, obscure Chinese smartphone maker Oukitel has a smartphone prototype that apparently houses a massive 10,000 mAh battery pack.

Some images showcasing this purported phone showed up on photo uploading website Imgur, and if they turn out to be real, it might mean that Oukitel’s handset will be able to ensure users get a week-long life cycle for their device.

Specs of the Oukitel smartphone are currently a mystery

We’re not given a lot of details about the coming smartphone, but we can make a few speculations based on what we see in the photos. It appears that the phone will be of the rugged variety, just like Samsung’s recent Galaxy S6 Active handset.

Furthermore, the prototype apparently runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, which is the latest build Google is offering device makers. The phone will most likely also be eligible for an update to Android M, coming out later this year.

As it’s pretty evident in the images, the smartphone is pretty thick, which proves that it bundles a chunky battery underneath the hood. Still, it will be interesting to see how Oukitel plans to handle the problem of large amounts of heat being generated by the battery and affecting the other components.

On the other hand, Oukitel could be employing a dual battery setup just like Gionee. In such a scenario, the two power boxes do not work at the same time, but the secondary battery starts taking things over when the primary one is out of power.

However, keep in mind that this is pure speculation at this point, as we don’t have any official confirmation yet. As we mentioned above, Oukitel’s smartphone is just a prototype, so it might take a while before the company is ready to offer it on the market for customers to grab.

We’ll keep an eye out for when that happens.
