One of the most important photographic events of the year is getting closer to us. Of course, we’re talking about Photokina, which is due in September and this weekend we already told you we were expecting the Nikon Coolpix A successor to make an appearance in the wild there.

But today, we’re going to talk about Olympus. The camera maker is reportedly planning to unveil a new mirrorless device in Cologne, Germany, along the plethora of compacts and DSLRs models coming from the competition.

According to very reliable sources reported by 43Rumors, a new Olympus OM-D mirrorless camera with Four Thirds image sensor is expected to arrive at the event.

For the time being, it's best if you take this info with a slight grain of salt, but since trusted sources are at play here, there’s a great possibility that the camera will become a reality in a few months.

But at the moment, we can’t tell you the exact specifications the new Olympus OM-D mirrorless camera will arrive soon, but as more information becomes available to us, we’ll keep you updated and in the loop.

For now, we know the mirrorless will feature a Micro Four Thirds image sensor, but that’s it. We don’t even know if the new model is going to be replaced or a new OM-D camera is coming our way.

The current lineup consists of the entry-level E-M10, mid-range E-M5 and high-end E-M1. From these products, the OM-D E-M10 has just launched this year, while the OM-D E-M1 saw the light of day back in 2013, so it shouldn't come as a shock if its life cycle came to an end at Photokina.

The E-M5 model is the oldest in the bunch, as this product saw the light of day back in February 2012. At the moment, the OM-D E-M5 is still available for pick-up from retailers like Amazon.

The camera boasts a 16MP Live-MOS sensor & Truepic VI image processor and back when it launched Olympus claimed the device had the “world’s fastest autofocus” onboard.

The OM-D E-M5 has high resolution 1.4million dot EVF with 120fps refresh rate and 100% accurate high end point electronic viewfinder.

Since May, we have been hearing rumors about Olympus developing a mirrorless camera with a full frame sensor. Back then the shooter was also said to be part of the OM-D, but ever since we’ve heard nothing else.

We’ll update you once more info becomes available and as we advance towards Photokina.
