Officials with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) say that they will contribute no less than $25 million (nearly €18.5 million) over 5 years to a new Center of Excellence, to be built at Northwestern University.

Northwestern is also the leader of the consortium of universities, associations, and private businesses that received the new NIST grant. The upcoming facility will be called the Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (ChiMaD) and will play a leading role in advancing materials research nationwide.

Other members of the consortium include the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, through the Northwestern-Argonne Institute of Science and Engineering partnership, the University of Chicago, and the Computation Institute.

Northwestern spin-off company QuesTek Innovations, materials scientists association ASM International, and the Fayetteville State University will also be involved with the new Center of Excellence.

“I’m particularly excited to announce this new alliance between NIST and two prominent research universities to drive innovation in the development of advanced materials,” comments NIST Director Patrick Gallagher, who is also the US Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology.
