Fans loved “New Moon,” the second film in “The Twilight Saga.” In fact, they loved it so much that they made it the third biggest opener in the history of cinema, which is not an insignificant feat especially coming from a movie studio that, less that a year ago, was not yet in the big league. However, critically, the film will prove one of the biggest disappointments of 2009, the Los Angeles Times’ The Envelope says.

As all moviegoers must already know by know, the beginning of the year also marks the beginning of the anticipation for the awards season. The nominees for the Academy Awards are revealed at the beginning of February, while the awards gala follows shortly. However, at about the same time, the movie industry will also be celebrating the biggest critical flops of the year that passed.

For 2009, “New Moon,” its cast and Megan Fox are likely to turn out to be the strongest contenders for the much-derided Razzie Awards. “‘Twilight: New Moon’ ‘needs to be nominated because it is overrated and I can finally say Golden Raspberry Award nominee Robert Pattinson.’ Adds our poster named kelemenmarc, ‘And I hope I can finally say Taylor Lautner too, a Golden Raspberry Award nominee.’ Beware, ‘Twilight’ haters: The first installment wasn’t nominated for a single Razzie in 2008. Oh, cruel Hollywood!” The Envelope writes after following the trendiest topics on the LATimes forums.

“Our posters believe the contest for worst actress is a diva smack-down between Megan Fox (‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ and ‘Jennifer’s Body’), Beyonce Knowles (‘Obsessed’), likely Oscar nominee Sandra Bullock (‘All About Steve’), Miley Cyrus (‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’), recent Emmy winner Katherine Heigl (‘The Ugly Truth’), Kristen Stewart (‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’) and Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson (‘Bride Wars’),” the report goes on to say.

Nominees for worst male performances may include, aside from Robert Pattinson (and perhaps Taylor Lautner too), Gerard Butler, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Cera and Jack Black, Will Ferrell and Steve Martin. However, right now, this is all in the realm of speculation: the nominees will be officially announced on February 1, a day before those for the Oscars, as tradition would have it.
