Macs need to go back to 64 bit...

Not that long ago, Yonah was the buzzword and everyone was eagerly awaiting the new Mac models that would be powered by the Intel chip. Now, Yonah has already become old as Intel keeps coming out with new processors such as Conroe and Merom.

Before the switch to Intel, Mac models would usually get updated once a year. Now, it looks that that trend is about to change as Intel keeps coming out with new improved versions of its processors at a much faster rate.

Merom is "a mobility-optimized, dual-core processor based on the new, state of the art, Intel Core microarchitecture" according to the company. It comes with a 667 MHz frontside bus and 4 MB of L2 cache, double the 2 MB found in current MacBook Pros. Intel is offering Merom in 2.0, 2.16 and 2.33GHz clock speeds.

While Apple has not made any official statement, Jason D. O'Grady reports that Apple is preparing for a revised MacBook Pro model that will feature the new processor.

"Apple already has Merom chips in hand and has been testing them for a while. They're probably waiting for inventory of existing MacBook Pros to sell down and/or for the official announcement to come from Intel."

While it seems soon for a new version of the MacBook Pro, considering it came out at the beginning of this year, it is quite possible that Apple will do it in order to get their machines back into the 64 bit ballpark, as the Yonah chip was, from this point of view, a step backwards.

Either way, it is not long now until WWDC, where Apple will make the announcement according to Jason D. O'Grady.
