A man has been injured after getting swallowed up by a sinkhole in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The man was operating a forklift which was consumed by the hole opening up in the ground at a building complex housing a warehouse, WABC reported.

According to NJ.com, the unnamed operator suffered a back injury, which is believed to be minor. The worker was employed at the Maple Street warehouse.

He was operating the heavy machinery when he fell in the sinkhole, but managed to get himself out by the time fire crews could assist him. He has been transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment.

The sinkhole is 40 by 40 foot (12 by 12 meters) large, and Assistant Fire Chief John Giancaspro mentions that they are conducting an inquiry into what made the ground collapse.
