Sony is sending word that it is developing a new game in its Jak and Daxter series. The new title will be called The Lost Frontier and is mainly aimed at those gamers who are using a PlayStation Portable handheld from Sony.

If you're not particularly interested in playing on the go, you can also get Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier for the PlayStation 2 home gaming console. No clear release date has been announced but fall is the targeted release season for Sony. Development duties are handled by High Impact Games.

The game is set around a quest that involves the two protagonists and their friend Kira. The threat that they must face is a dark veil coming down around their world, which can only be defeated by a Sage. Keira must face her destiny and become a Sage, while Jak and Daxter are set to protect her on her quest.

Sony is promising that players will be offered plenty of laughter as the two unlikely partners begin their adventure on foot before progressing to airplanes. There are five planes to choose from and a variety of airborne enemies and sky pirates will try to make life hard for the player. One particularly interesting addition to the game is a Gunstaff, basically a weapon that can be turned into all the new ones that appear in Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.

Jak and Daxter, as a franchise, was first presented in 2001 by Sony and, since then, it has sold more than 6 million copies of the five titles release. The recurring theme of the franchise is the need for balance in the in game world, which is torn between a light and a dark eco. The new game will again tackle the theme, while introducing new elements, like the already mentioned aerial combat.
