At just a few weeks after the release of the first upgrade for the embedded and componentized flavor of Windows 7, Microsoft is adding new features to the operating system.

Essentially, the Redmond company made available for download a feature update for Windows Embedded Standard 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) RTM.

According to Lynda Allen, Microsoft Embedded program manager, customers will need to head over to the ECE site in order to access the feature update for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1. Of course, they will need valid ECE accounts in order to download the refresh.

“This update contains two new features - Enhanced Write Filter Provider and File Based Write Filter Provider,” Allen revealed.

Fact is that some customers might already be familiar with the features mentioned above.

Both Enhanced Write Filter Provider and File Based Write Filter Provider have already been provided to the predecessor of Windows Embedded Standard 7, namely Windows Embedded Standard 2009 earlier this month.

But just as it is the case with Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 also need to make their way to the ECE site to get the update.

“These new components provide access to the respective Write Filter API through the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) layer,” Allen said.

“The goal of each feature is to expose the full functionality of the Write Filter to all .NET languages as well as to the Windows Scripting Host. Furthermore, the Write Filter Providers enables remote management of the Enhanced Write Filter or File Based Write Filter.”

Microsoft included the two new features into the Window Embedded Standard 7 SP1 March 2011 Feature Update.

SP1 RTM for Windows Embedded Standard 7 was released earlier this month in parallel with the first upgrade for the Windows 7 client.
