Since everyone in the IT world seems to be pretty stoked nowadays about eco-friendly, power-efficient CPU solutions, VIA has decided to aim for the top spot in this segment, developing and launching their new Eden X2 processor.

Since it's been unveiled during the Embedded World 2011 show, currently open in Nuremberg, Germany, it's quite clear that the new Eden X2 dual-core processor from VIA targets specifically the fanless and embedded systems' market, one that's actually growing with each passing year.

As VIA informs us, the new X2 processors are built using a 40nm process and they're actually fully compatible with some of the company's other processors, such as the VIA Eden, VIA C7 and VIA Nano E-Series, all of which have managed to find their way into all sorts of different implementations.

That's also possible due to the fact that they're using a VIA NanoBGA2 package of 21mm x 21mm with a die size of 11mm x 6mm.

Given the fact that it actually combines two different Eden cores, the X2 is capable of delivering an enhanced multimedia performance, but also VT virtualization support, allowing users to run legacy software and applications while affecting the overall level of performance to a very small extent.

It's also interesting to mention that, since we're talking about a dual-core processor delivering native 64-bit support, the X2 will also work quite well with the Windows Embedded Standard 7 operating system, that's sure to become a whole lot more popular on the future as far as embedded and fanless systems are concerned.

As far as pricing and availability for the new boards are concerned, we'll have to mention that, according to VIA, board and systems built around the new Eden X2 won't be available until Q2 2011, and even then, it's not really yet known just how much they'll sell for.
